Stem’s Athena Platform is an AI platform that optimizes energy systems. It uses predictive analytics and machine learning to monitor and manage energy usage, helping companies optimize revenue and save money on electricity usage. The platform contains several apps that allow users to monitor and control renewable energy sites, but until now, it lacked a centralized place where users could see an overview of their entire portfolio’s performance.

Challenge

The MercurcyGate Transportation Management Solution (TMS) has been servicing its customers for over 20 years. In that time, legacy systems have very rarely been depractated so there would not be interupttions to thier customers base on those old systems. Over time new systems were built and intergrated around the legacy core systems. This operation has worked for MercuryGate until is has reach a point of crital technical debt, makes knowledge overhead and disjoined user expereince. The challenge MercuryGate is facing is how to continue to provide world-class product and service without hindering current custeomrs but being able to leverage the latest technologies for growth in the future. Another challenge is to provide a user expereince that is easy to understand, increase productivity and decrease tribal knoweldge so that new users have a forgiving experince.

Solution

As the User Experience Manager as MercuryGate, I was tasked with develop a user experience strategy to build a new platform that all new and existing customers would be transition that would minimize disruptions and allow for an approach that is scalable and extensible to future feature development. My strategy included a full application audit, procurement of user analytical tools, customer research, build out of a design system, cross team agreements, design/review sessions, and executive roadshow to have stakeholder support. After 2 years working through the process we have completed the main iteration of new TMS. Our legacy customers are now on the cutting edge of user experience and development. Our new customers are not hindered by legacy system and experience, MercuryGate is set to have an explosive impact in the industry foley focused on providing the best TMS a company can utilize.
